According to many, the Piedmont has among the best wines in the world. The top wine is the Barolo from the region of the village with the same name. Other famous red wines are the Barbaresco and wines made from the Nebbiolo or Barbera grapes. Tradition says the Nebbiolo can only be harvested after the first gaze in fall. The Barbera often carries the name of the local region and often ripes quickly where other grapes need more time. In good year a Barbera Superiore is produced. Good white wines are the Roero Arneis, Piemonte Chardonnay and the Gavi wines. And of course the sparkling white wines Spumante and Moscato d’Asti. Finally many good grappas are produced as well. |

In the Piedmont you can still call at a winery and ask the farmer if you can taste the wine or visit a cantina in one of the villages. In addition there are of course many enotecas where you can taste and buy wine. All this in a relaxed atmosphere sharing the same passion: wine. Paying for wine tasting is not common.

Since several generation (1826) the family Scaglione produces top wines in the hills between Acqui and Canelli. Their red wines (Barbera d’Asti en Monferrato) and Moscato are delicious. The DOC Loazzola dessert wines is great experience.
